The International Day for Women in Maritime is Observed in Somalia

On Sunday, Somalia commemorated the International Day for Women in Maritime with an event aimed at honouring women’s contributions to the nation’s maritime sectors, with backing from the United Nations.
A new project to empower women via education and job creation was introduced by Somali leaders. Somali women continue to be under-represented in the marine industry due to gender discrimination.
Fartun Abdukadir, Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, stated, “The Ministry of Ports and Maritime Affairs promises to remove the obstacles that keep women from engaging in maritime activities, fight discrimination, and endeavour to establish employment and leadership opportunities for Somali women.”
The Women in the Maritime Sector National Action Plan was first presented by the UN and the Somali government in 2023, with the goal of expanding women’s opportunities.
The percentage of women in Somalia’s marine industry is not well-documented. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that between 4 and 5 percent of fishing boat owners are women. With a length of over 3,333 km along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, the nation boasts the longest coastline in continental Africa.
