A Kenyan Cop Sent to Haiti was Killed in a Bloody Gang Conflict

Kenyan officials said Sunday that a Kenyan police officer who had been sent to Haiti to help fight violent gangs was killed in a clash with one of the gangs. Kenyan forces were conducting operations to combat gang violence in the Artibonite region when the incident took place.

According to the Kenyan mission, the officers answered a call for help from Pont-Sonde locals. Godfrey Otunge, the commander of the Kenyan force in Haiti, said the officer died from his wounds after being taken for medical attention.

The officers pursued the attackers after the shooting. Jack Ombaka, a mission spokesperson, thanked Salvadoran military and hospital staff for their assistance following the event. Ombaka said, “This is the sacrifice our courageous officer made—he lost his life while defending the people of Haiti.” It is well known that the Gran Grif gang rules the area.

This defeat is a blow to efforts to rein in Haiti’s gangs, which have been out of control since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in 2021. Kenya has dispatched hundreds of officers to help Haiti’s law enforcement, and in February, 200 more cops will join the 600 already there as part of a multinational group that also includes people from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Jamaica.
