Sudan: Wad Madani Mosque Air Strike Kills 31
According to local activists, a military airstrike on a mosque in Wad Madani, the capital of Sudan, killed thirty-one persons. The city, which is the headquarters of Al-Jazira state and is situated just south of Khartoum, was attacked on Sunday evening following prayers.
The information was released in a statement on Tuesday by the Wad Madani Resistance Committee, one of the numerous volunteer organisations delivering help around the war-torn nation. The army allegedly used “barrel bombs” in the attack, according to the committee. Additionally, they stated that rescue crews are still searching through the remains of “dozens of charred and mutilated bodies,” with over half of the victims still unidentified.
Conflict between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese military has ravaged the country since April 2023. Tens of thousands of people have died as a result of the conflict, which has also caused one of the biggest humanitarian disasters and displacement in history.
Al-Jazira state, a crucial agricultural region that has been ruled by the RSF since late last year, is the target of the conflict between the two factions. Attacks on civilians and looting of humanitarian supplies are among the war crimes for which both armies have been charged.
