The US Claims to have Finished Its Military Pullout from Niger

The US military said on Monday that it had fulfilled the deadline of September 15th by withdrawing all of its personnel and equipment from Niger.

Its withdrawal happened gradually, beginning in May when Niger’s new government renounced a military cooperation agreement with the United States.

After taking over in a coup last year, Niamey has distanced itself from its Western allies and turned to Russia for security in recent months.

One major setback for Washington is the estimated 1,000 US military personnel that have left the country.

Niamey has been an important ally in its fight against Islamist insurgents operating in the area before to the coup.

Washington had given Niger hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid and training, along with France and other European nations.

Although the US had given local authorities control over its final military bases last month, roughly twenty personnel remained, primarily to supervise the pullout.

Concerns over the increasing number of extremist organizations active in the West African region have led to their departure.
