Following the US Abduction of Venezuelan President Maduro, Ramaphosa calls for UN Intervention

Recent US military action in Venezuela has deeply alarmed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has demanded the immediate release of Nicolás Maduro and his spouse. Ramaphosa urged the UN Security Council to step in, warning that the events represent a grave danger to both regional stability and global peace.

Speaking about the matter, Ramaphosa claimed that President Maduro’s arrest violates both international law and the United Nations Charter. He emphasized that the Security Council is the only international body with the authority to deal with issues of peace and security and urged it to use its combined knowledge to find a solution.

Ramaphosa warned that the event would create a risky precedent by essentially granting military actions against independent states “carte blanche.” According to him, international organizations must deal with such acts since they threaten the world’s rules-based order.

Reaction has been highly split on a global scale. While other nations have expressed support, further dividing the world, China and Russia have taken the lead in denouncing the US action, calling it illegal and destabilizing.
