UNHCR Calls on the World to assist Sudanese Refugees in Chad
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has called for an urgent increase in global support as thousands flee Sudan’s Darfur region into Chad, carrying fresh accounts of violence and trauma.
UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly Clements made the appeal on Thursday after visiting refugees in Farchana, Chad, who had recently escaped the besieged city of el-Fasher. Clements said many families spoke of renewed horror, describing the situation as the “resurrection of an old trauma.
It’s a city that had been under siege for 500 days. These are people in desperate need,” she said, adding that the new arrivals require everything—from shelter and clean water to safety and a chance to rebuild their lives. Praising Chad for its long history of hosting refugees, Clements acknowledged that the country’s capacity is stretched thin. She urged the international community to step up quickly.
Chad and humanitarian partners cannot face this crisis alone. They need help,” Clements emphasized. “We need stronger, sustained international support—both to assist the refugees in Chad and to reach those still suffering inside Darfur.
