Trump Warns Additional US Air Strikes in Nigeria
In an interview with the New York Times, US President Donald Trump indicated that if Christians are killed in Nigeria, the US may launch additional strikes, despite Nigeria’s refusal to acknowledge that Christians endure persecution.
It comes after the United States launched a military strike on Nigeria on Christmas Day, claiming it was against Daesh extremists in the country’s northwest at the request of Abuja. The Nigerian government claimed the strike as a ‘joint action’ against ‘terrorists’.
When asked about his own Africa adviser’s claim that Daesh and Boko Haram fighters were killing more Muslims than Christians, Trump responded, “I believe that Muslims are also being massacred in Nigeria. But it’s largely Christians. The African country’s population of over 230 million is roughly evenly split between Muslims and Christians.
While it has dealt with numerous security challenges, including bloodshed and kidnapping by Islamic terrorists in the north, it denies the notion that Christians experience systematic persecution. According to Nigerian police, insurgents have slain several Muslims and Christians.
