Trump Claims that a Ten-DCeasefire has been Reached Between Israel and Lebanon
Trump stated on Truth Social that the ceasefire would start at 5 p.m. US Eastern time (9 p.m. GMT) after having “excellent” phone conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and top US military official Dan Caine were instructed by the US leader to collaborate with the two nations “to achieve a Lasting PEACE.”
In a post on X, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam praised the news and called the truce “a central Lebanese demand we have pursued since the very first day of the war.” Ursula Von Der Leyen, president of the European Commission, praised the truce as “a relief.”
The announcement of the truce coincides with Washington’s ongoing attempts to come to an agreement to put an end to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Tehran has emphasized that any accord must include a truce in Lebanon.
Hezbollah, an Iran-backed military group based in Lebanon, attacked Israel on March 2, drawing Lebanon into the Middle East conflict. Since then, Israeli ground forces have invaded the southern region of Lebanon, killing over 2,000 civilians and displacing over a million.
