This Month, the Philippine President Will Meet With Trump in Washington

MANILA: The Philippine Foreign Ministry announced Friday that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will go to Washington this month, becoming the first Southeast Asian leader to visit the country since Donald Trump became office.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that the trip, which comes after Trump’s tariff decision earlier this week, will take place from July 20 to 22. The visit’s specifics are still pending.

Marcos is the “first ASEAN head of state invited by Trump,” according to Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez, who was speaking to media about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

According to Prof. Ranjit Sing Rye, president of OCTA Research, talks would probably centre on trade and security. In my opinion, the meeting between the US and Philippine presidents is quite important, particularly given the current dynamics in the South China Sea, Rye told Arab News.

It represents the expansion and strengthening of US-Philippine ties under the Trump administration.” Due to territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a vital waterway that sees billions of dollars’ worth of annual trade, tensions between China and the Philippines have remained high.
