The UN Head Denounces Further Houthi Assaults on Ships in the Red Sea

YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared on Friday that new Houthi rebel attacks on foreign commerce in the Red Sea are intolerable and infringe upon the right to free passage.

This week, the Yemeni organisation launched another round of ship attacks, seizing and sinking two ships that were trying to cross the channel that connects the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. Eleven sailors are unaccounted for, and four are thought to be dead.

For the first time in over six months, the organisation launched strikes against foreign vessels. Between November 2023 and December 2024, terrorists often used drones and missiles to target over 100 boats in retaliation for Israel’s war on Gaza.

Shipping between Asia and Europe now takes a lot longer and costs a lot more because of the campaign’s forced rerouting of shipping corporations over Africa. Last Saturday, the Houthis attacked and sank the Magic Seas, shattering hopes that shipping in the river may be getting back to normal. Every member of the crew was saved.

The gang then launched an attack on the Eternity C on Monday, sinking it on Wednesday. Ten of the twenty-five people on board have been saved. Greek businesses operated both ships, which were flying Liberian flags.
