The UN Denounces 52 Deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Caused by Rebels Sponsored by ISIL

At least 52 civilians have been slain this month by ISIL-backed rebels, according to the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to MONUSCO, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), based in Uganda, attacked the Beni and Lubero areas of North Kivu province from August 9 to August 16.

MONUSCO condemned the deaths, warned that the death toll could yet climb, and noted that the most recent ADF violence was accompanied by kidnappings, looting, and property destruction.

The UN mission stated that it would strengthen its assistance to the Congolese government for the protection of civilians, since the region’s people already face a dire humanitarian situation. In the mineral-rich east of the DRC, the ADF is one of several militias fighting for territory and resources.

The resurgence of violence coincides with a simmering battle in the area between the M23 militia, which is backed by Rwanda, and the DRC army. Both parties accuse one another of breaking a ceasefire agreement that was recently negotiated by the United States.
