The Ivorian Court has confirmed Tidjane Thiam as the President of the PDCI.

An Ivorian court denied a judicial challenge against Tidjane Thiam’s leadership of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI) on May 22, 2025, enabling him to continue leading the opposition party in spite of recent nationality-related scandals.

According to the complaint, which was submitted by Valérie Yapo, a member of the party’s political bureau, Thiam lost his Ivorian nationality when he obtained French citizenship in 1987. She said this was against the party’s rules and rendered him unfit to hold the office of president. However, Thiam’s leadership was essentially upheld when the court declared the case inadmissible.

After weeks of political strain, the decision was made. Due to his dual nationality, Thiam was struck off the national electoral roll in April 2025, which put his bid for president in October in jeopardy. On May 12, he resigned temporarily as president of PDCI in protest, claiming “judicial harassment.” Two days later, at an emergency congress, he received almost 99% of the vote and was re-elected by party members.

The court’s judgement guarantees Thiam’s position inside the PDCI, but his political future is still up in the air because the party is still contesting the ruling that barred him from voter registration, which is a prerequisite for his presidential campaign.
