The President of the UCI Cycling World Championship Sees Rwanda as the Next Major Cycling Destination Worldwide

Rwanda has made history by being the first country in Africa to host the renowned UCI Cycling World Championships. According to UCI President David Lappartient, the event is being heralded as a watershed for cycling in Africa and is expected to hasten the sport’s expansion throughout the continent. With 36 more countries participating than Europe, Africa is the most represented continent here,” Lappartient stated. “Cycling is genuinely becoming popular in Africa.
Lappartient has also set his sights on Rwanda as the next major worldwide center for production and innovation in cycling. He recently discussed his plan to bring prestigious tournaments like the World Tour to the nation with President Paul Kagame.
Although cycling has a long history in Europe, we need to spread to all five continents,” he stated. “I think the Tour du Rwanda could be elevated to the level of a World Tour event in Rwanda.” Lappartient views cycling as a means for unification that goes beyond sport. “This week-long event has the potential to foster peace and bring communities together,” he said.
