The President of Nigeria Orders a Significant military Reorganization amid Coup Attempt Rumors
Top security officers have been changed by the president of Nigeria, a West African nation dealing with several security issues and ongoing bloodshed in the conflict-affected north.
Although no explanation was provided, the change coincides with the government’s denial of coup plot rumors following local media claims that at least 20 military officers, including a colonel and a brigadier general, were arrested in September.
This week, protests also rocked Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, where police used tear gas and detained dozens of demonstrators demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra separatist group, which aims to grant independence to the southeast region of Nigeria.
The nation is home to a diverse range of armed groups. This year, Nigeria’s indigenous terrorist group, Boko Haram, made a significant comeback. In order to enforce its extreme interpretation of Islamic law and combat Western education, the group turned to violence in 2009.
Attacks have also been carried out by Ansaru, a splinter organization of Boko Haram, and Islamic State West Africa Province, an affiliate of the Islamic State group. Additionally prevalent are criminal organizations known as bandits, which specialize in looting and kidnapping for ransom.
