The Police Minister is Accused by a Top South African Official of Conspiring with Criminal Syndicates

In an unusual action, KwaZulu-Natal police chief General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi conducted a news conference on Sunday and accused Shadrack Sibiya and Senzo Mchunu of interfering with sensitive police investigations.

Additionally, he said that once it was discovered that criminal syndicates were responsible for the killings, both men disbanded a vital crime team that was entrusted with looking into a string of politically motivated homicides in the province.

According to Mkhwanazi, his inquiry revealed that drug cartels and businesspeople were controlling some “politicians, law enforcement, SAPS (South African Police Service), metro police and correctional services, prosecutors, and judiciary.

Claims of police corruption are not new, and South Africa has one of the worst crime rates in the world. Nonetheless, it is uncommon for senior security personnel to accuse one another of having ties to criminals. Mchunu has referred to Mkhwanazi’s allegations as “baseless” and refuted them.

In a statement, Mchunu said, “The Minister of Police will never permit his integrity, the integrity of the Ministry, or the integrity of the SAPS at large to be compromised by insinuations made without due process or evidence, by anyone, including Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
