The Inaugural Games are a Demonstration of Togetherness by the Alliance of Sahel States

The inaugural Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Games were held in Bamako, the capital of Mali, from June 21 to June 28, 2025. More than 500 professional athletes from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger participated in archery, football, traditional wrestling, and other sports over a week. The incident occurs during a period of severe regional instability.

For more than ten years, jihadist insurgencies including organisations associated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State have plagued all three nations. The reigning juntas resorted to Russian mercenaries for assistance after expelling French soldiers in military coups.

The three countries’ larger endeavour to strengthen their unity within the recently established Alliance of Sahel States, a political and security alliance, including the AES Games. Third place in the event went to Burkina Faso. As Burkina Faso is ready to host the next edition in 2026, the AES flag was formally given to Roland Somda, Minister of Youth and Sport.
