The EU Presents its most Aggressive Effort to Get Israel to Stop the Conflict in Gaza

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, called on the 27 member states to raise tariffs on some Israeli goods and to impose sanctions on two members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, as well as 10 Hamas leaders and Israeli settlers.

Since the EU is Israel’s biggest commercial partner, the tariffs could have a significant impact on the country’s economy, which is already being shook by the expense of a protracted conflict. The European Commission will immediately withhold about 32 million euros ($37.5 million) in bilateral funds. It’s uncertain if a majority will accept the trade restrictions and sanctions.

The violence in Gaza has sparked demonstrations in several European cities, including Amsterdam and Barcelona, and increased criticism of Brussels’ bureaucracy for what is seen as its incapacity to effectively urge Israel to cease its military actions and allow more humanitarian relief.

Health officials in the enclave say that since the conflict started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an offensive on Israel, the number of Palestinian deaths in Gaza has approached 65,000.

We are sorry to have to take this action. The European Commission’s trade representative, Maroš Šefčovič, stated, “But we think it is both appropriate and proportionate given the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
