The DRC’s Vital Kisangani Airport is the Target of a Drone Attack
For the second time in as many months, security forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo claim to have stopped a drone attack on Kisangani’s vital Bangboka International Airport. Tshopo’s provincial authorities reported that the attack happened on Sunday and attributed it to the M23 armed organization, which opposes the government and is supported by neighboring Rwanda. Officials claim that four “kamikaze drones loaded with submunitions” were fired at the airport before being shot down after being intercepted. There were no recorded casualties.
Both military and civilian operations are served by Bangboka Airport. In the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Congolese army utilizes its runway to launch fighter jets and attack drones against M23 insurgents and Rwandan army positions.
The drones attacked at four different times, starting in the middle of the afternoon, according to the authorities. As a Compagnie Africaine d’Aviation civilian aircraft was getting ready to land, the last attempt was made.
Since its comeback in late 2021, the M23 has taken control of sizable areas of mineral-rich eastern Congo. The group claimed to have damaged a military drone command center in an attack that targeted the same airport between January 31 and February 1.
