The Army Reports that There has been an Attack on a Military Training Center in the Capital of Mali

Tuesday morning saw an attack on a military training center in the capital of Mali, according to the army.

The army’s communications service, according to Col. Marima Sagara, deputy director, received reports of an attack on the Bamako gendarme training school but did not possess any other details. A correspondent for the Associated Press observed smoke rising in the distance and heard two explosions. The training facility is situated outside of the city limits.

It was unknown whether the situation was under control, who the attackers were, and how many there were.

Mali has been fighting an insurgency for more than ten years, joined by certain armed organizations that are affiliated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger. The ruling juntas in all three countries have ejected French personnel after military takeovers in recent years and instead have resorted to Russian mercenary forces for security support.

Attacks in Mali’s north and center are getting more frequent. An al-Qaida ambush in July claimed the lives of about fifty Russian mercenaries who were traveling in a convoy.

Alongside Mali’s army, the mercenaries were battling largely Tuareg rebels when their convoy was forced to flee into jihadi territory and was ambushed south of the Tinzaouaten commune.
