The African Union Voices Concern Over the New Travel ban Issued by the US President

The African Union has raised concerns about US President Donald Trump’s newly issued travel ban, warning that it could strain diplomatic ties with African nations. Seven of the 12 countries affected by the executive order announced on Wednesday night are in Africa, while three more African countries are subject to partial travel restrictions.

Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan are subject to the full ban. Meanwhile, Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Togo face limited restrictions. The African Union urged the US to dialogue with the nations affected actively.

Former President Trump has defended the travel ban, claiming it is necessary to protect the United States from “foreign terrorists” and other security threats. The ban targets several African nations, as well as Iran, Myanmar, Haiti, Yemen, and Afghanistan. This decision has sparked disappointment in Kabul.

“America has no right to do this or enforce such a ban. It must be cancelled,” said Ilias Kakal, a Taliban guard. However, travel agents note that the move is unlikely to have a significant effect, as obtaining US visas has already been extremely difficult for Afghans since the Taliban’s return to power.
