At Holy Thursday Mass, in The Midst of World Tensions, the Pope Begs for Togetherness

At St. Peter’s Basilica on Holy Thursday, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Chrism Mass and used the opportunity to denounce the misuse of power and the desire for dominance. Numerous baptisms, communions, confirmations, and anointings of the sick took place all year round in the many parishes of Rome, thanks to the enormous vats of oil that were blessed during the event.

Amidst the continuing crisis in the Middle East, he has time and again called for a halt to violence and urged world leaders to choose discussion and de-escalation instead of fighting, all in the name of spreading a greater message of peace.

The pope’s unusual public intervention on the conflict just weeks ago was seen as critical of current military policies and a rebuke of the Trump administration’s approach to the war; he urged that the cycle of violence not widen into an unbridgeable chasm.

Pope Francis, the first American to hold the office, has been more outspoken in his calls for peace and has come under fire for opposing policies that, in his and the Vatican’s view, put an emphasis on force rather than reconciliation.
