Tension is High in Cameroon as Protests Break out After The Election

Following the official announcement of the results of the presidential election, Cameroon had a second day of political unrest Tuesday. Protests disrupted cities, and the brutal suppression of rallies and arbitrary arrests drew international attention.
While irate protests broke out in other metropolitan centers including Garoua and the commercial center, Douala, on Monday, large police troops were stationed in the capital, Yaoundé. The atmosphere in Douala remained tense on Tuesday, as residents blocked traffic at city exits in protest of the results announced.
With a strong statement, the European Union expressed “deep concern about the violent repression of demonstrations” and lamented “the death by firearm of several civilians.” While calling for discussion, impartial investigations, and prudence, Brussels also demanded the release of “all persons arbitrarily detained since the election.
The notable absence of European, American, and Canadian ambassadors from the Constitutional Council’s session where the results were announced was an apparent diplomatic snub. Patricia Hermine Tomaïno Ndam Njoya, who finished in fifth place, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary categorically disapproved of the results, describing the voting process as weakened, undermined by irregularities and manipulation.
