Syria: During Days of Fighting in Aleppo, the Defense Ministry Declares a Ceasefire

Syria’s Defence Ministry has declared a ceasefire after three days of fighting between government forces and Kurdish fighters in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. The Kurdish-led Syrian democratic forces did not immediately respond, and a local Kurdish council rejected requests for the fighters to withdraw.

Aleppo resident Radwan Hamadi hopes the ceasefire will last despite being shaken by the violence. “Last night was really challenging, but we simply want things to end amicably. Now that there is a ceasefire, hopefully things will improve. Thank God, I’ve reopened my shop, so we can resume working and earning a living,” he remarked.

Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh were among the Aleppo neighbourhoods where armed groups were given six hours to evacuate, according to the ministry statement announcing the truce. However, no combatants fled in the hours following the announcement.

Still, some locals maintain their optimism. Ahmed Hajjar is one of them; he stated that “the ceasefire is good, it’s excellent, thank God, it’s a very good step, the army took a good step. For us to breathe and move around, they must now eliminate these checkpoints. I can’t operate at my tailor shop right now since the employees can’t arrive, and I can’t ship any goods outside.
