Sudan’s New Prime Minister Dissolves the Cabinet One Day after Entering Office

Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris eliminated the country’s provisional government, state news agency SUNA reported. The announcement occurred late on Sunday, only one day after Idris assumed office as the country’s first prime minister in four years, following a military takeover.

Sudan descended into civil war in April 2023, when tensions between the military and the breakaway organisation Rapid Support Forces erupted into open violence in the country’s capital, Khartoum, and other areas. In an address on Sunday, Idris asked countries that assist the RSF to end “criminal operations.

At least 24,000 individuals have been reported slain, with the figure likely much higher.

More than 14 million people have been displaced or forced to flee their homes, with over 4 million moving to neighbouring countries.

According to the United Nations and international rights organisations, the war has been marked by atrocities like as mass rape and ethnically motivated killings, which constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in Darfur’s western area. Famine was declared in at least five sites, with the epicentre being the devastated Darfur region.
