Sudan’s Future, According To UNICEF, Rests On A Truce

Sheldon Yett, the UNICEF representative in Sudan, stated today, August 8, that the nation is facing a “child protection emergency” and emphasized that “a ceasefire is essential to Sudan’s future.”

Yett stated that the Famine Review Committee’s (FRC) declaration of famine in Camp Zamzam, northern Darfur, “is no small thing” in an interview with UN News from Port Sudan.

This level of acute food insecurity has only been proclaimed three times in the last twenty years, he stated. It indicates a child’s desperation. The residents must be in a difficult situation. It indicates that the current state of affairs is really concerning.

Zamzam Camp is only “a canary in a coal mine,” the UNICEF official added, and “the indication of terrible things that are happening there, terrible food insecurity.”

In spite of the “extremely, extremely difficult to do so,” he said that UNICEF is “bringing in supplies for severe acute malnutrition” and “ensuring that they’re getting to where they need to go.”

“The war is ongoing,” Yett declared. Access is restricted. It’s challenging to drive a truck in. New permissions are issued on a regular basis, there are roadside bandits, shootings, instability, and it’s very, very hard. Additionally, I anticipate that things will worsen until there is calm, a cease-fire, or agreements for safe entry.
