Somalis Watching The Euro Football Final Are Killed By A Car Bomb
In the Somali capital of Mogadishu, a car bomb went off outside a well-liked cafe frequented by football fans, killing several people.
When the bomb went off on Sunday night at 22:28 local time, customers at Top Coffee were watching Spain vs. England in the Euro 2024 football final.
According to police, the explosion left at least five people dead and twenty more injured. Subsequently, nine people had died, according to security sources who spoke with the AFP news agency.
Al-Shabab, a jihadist group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
When the bomb went off, the restaurant was packed, with some patrons scurrying for cover outdoors, according to witnesses.
“As we were watching the first half of the game, we heard a tremendous, terrifying explosion. Mohamed Muse, one of the survivors, told that “everyone had to figure out how to save themselves.”
“I saw people in danger, injured people screaming for help, and others confused – it was terrifying,” he continued.
According to a second witness who spoke with the AFP news agency, several patrons of the cafe were able to get out by scaling the ladders at the back and leaping over the wall.
In addition to destroying numerous cars, Sunday’s blast also caused damage to multiple buildings.
