Seychelles to Conduct Presidential Election Rerun After No Candidate Secures Majority

Seychelles will hold a rerun of its presidential election after no candidate secured an outright majority, the electoral authority announced Sunday. Opposition leader Patrick Herminie received 48.8% of the vote, while incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan earned 46.4%, according to official results. A candidate must win more than 50% to be declared the winner. The date for the rerun has not yet been announced.
Herminie represents the United Seychelles party, which dominated the country’s politics for decades before losing power in 2020. Ramkalawan, seeking a second term, leads the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa party, campaigning on economic recovery, social development, and environmental sustainability to prevent United Seychelles from regaining control. Voting began on Thursday, with the majority of citizens casting their ballots on Saturday.
The 115-island archipelago in the Indian Ocean is renowned for luxury tourism and environmental travel. These industries have contributed to Seychelles’ position as one of Africa’s wealthiest countries, according to the World Bank, in terms of GDP per capita.
