At Least 36 People Died and Hundreds Injured in Madagascar’s Cyclone Gezani
According to an updated toll released Thursday by the disaster authorities of the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, a storm with strong winds has devastated the second-largest city of the country and killed at least 35 people.
On Tuesday, Cyclone Gezani pounded the eastern coastal city of Toamasina with winds of up to 250 kilometres per hour (155 miles per hour), making landfall. On Thursday, the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNRGC) announced that 35 lives had been lost, 6 were still missing, and 374 had been injured.
After the hurricane “ravaged up to 75 percent of Toamasina and it surrounds,” Thursday saw the appeal for “international solidarity” from Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the new leader of Madagascar.
Photos taken by the AFP on Wednesday showed the devastated city of 400,000 people, with roofs blown off buildings, hundreds of trees down, and people trudging through flooded streets. Photos shared with AFP on Thursday showed that humanitarian workers toiled through the night to clear roadways that had been obstructed by debris. The cyclone caused more than 18,000 dwellings to be demolished and 50,000 others to be damaged or flooded, according to the BNRGC.
