Russian FM Lavrov Warns that US Assaults on Iran Could Lead to Nuclear Proliferation
Russia’s foreign minister issued a warning on Tuesday that US and Israeli attacks on Iran would incite the Islamic Republic and its Arab neighbors to get nuclear weapons. Sergei Lavrov stated during a news conference in Moscow that rather than limiting nuclear proliferation, countries may suddenly feel they need the bomb—or face an American strike.
Additionally, he denied US allegations that Tehran has been pursuing a nuclear arsenal. We frequently hear about the war’s objectives, but there is still no proof that Iran was working on nuclear weapons, which was the primary, if not the only, rationale for the conflict. The IAEA and U.S. professional intelligence officials have confirmed that Iran has not developed or sought to produce nuclear weapons.
Lavrov also seemed to support Tehran’s assertion that its nuclear program is solely for civilian uses, such as the production of clean energy. There is no inalienable right to enrich uranium for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. It is probably unrealistic to suggest that Iran should cede this right, which other states have, on its own.
