Ramaphosa Thanked Putin for the Liberation of South Africans Fighting for Russia
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, praised Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart, on Tuesday for his assistance in ensuring the return of 17 South Africans to their homeland. They were on the front lines of the conflict in Ukraine after allegedly being duped into thinking they were traveling to Russia for bodyguard training.
Four of the guys have already returned to the country, and eleven more will do so shortly, according to Ramaphosa. Two more people are still in Russia; one is in a Moscow hospital and the other is going through “administrative travel processing.
After becoming stranded in the center of war in the Donbas region of Ukraine in November, the group had placed “distress calls” to the South African authorities. Earlier this month, Ramaphosa brought up their case with Putin. How the soldiers were tricked into fighting for Russia is still being investigated.
They center on claims of fraud, human trafficking, and breaking a statute that forbids South Africans from enlisting in the armed forces of another nation without permission from the government. The president also reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to using diplomacy to end the situation peacefully.
