Qatar will Host Fresh Talks Between the M23 Rebels and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The official involved in mediation efforts continued, “We acknowledge the difficulties on the ground and hope they can be resolved quickly through communication and sincere commitment.”
The announcement comes just before Kinshasa and the Rwanda-backed rebel group agreed last month to establish a peace agreement by August 18.
He claimed that “both parties have responded positively to the facilitator and expressed a willingness to continue negotiations” despite the fact that the deadline had not been fulfilled.
According to the Declaration of Principles, which was signed in Qatar on July 19, the plan called for talks to start by August 8 and a final agreement to be completed by Monday.
With Rwanda’s support, the M23 armed group has taken control of large areas of eastern DRC since resuming its activities at the end of 2021, sparking a humanitarian situation that is getting worse.
When the M23 took control of the important cities of Goma and Bukavu earlier this year and established their own governments, there was a fresh uptick in combat. In order to follow up on the declaration’s implementation and finalize an agreement, Qatar is “currently hosting an important session of negotiations in Doha,” the official continued.
