Protesters Honor Those Slain In Recent Disturbances By Taking To Lagos’ Streets
On Friday, demonstrators held a candlelit march through the streets of Lagos in memory of the people who lost their lives in recent protests.
Using the hashtag #Endbadgovernance, the demonstrations have centered on allegations of resource mismanagement and corruption in Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, as well as the country’s cost of living crisis.
Amnesty International claims, based on verification from the organization as well as witness and family reports, that 22 protestors had died during the demonstrations in six states.
Calls for responsibility for the fatalities at what they claim were nonviolent protests were made by demonstrators.
“Arrest and trial are necessary for all those accountable for those killings. Hassan Taiwo Soweto, a protestor, stated, “We are demanding a Democratic public investigation into the killings and the crackdown throughout the nation.”
Some claim that the demonstrations have been worthwhile in spite of the significant human cost.
According to demonstrator Gideon Adeyeni, “it has been a success overall,” the Associated Press said.
“We have, made our demands known, we have made our grievances known,” he continues.
