Prior to Elections, the Black Community in Germany is Concerned About Racism
After Germany’s initial lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic was lifted on a warm summer’s evening in 2020, Omar Diallo and two of his friends decided to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Muslim holiday of sacrifice.
In a recent interview in Erfurt, the capital of the eastern German state of Thuringia, Diallo, a 22-year-old immigrant from Guinea in West Africa, told the Associated Press that he and his friends were “enjoying life, playing music, walking through the city at night” when the evening took a tragic turn.
Walking through a park and passed a large, run-down storage building, they were suddenly approached by three white males wearing black clothing.
With dread still lingering in his eyes, Diallo recalled the shouts, “What do you want here, f–king foreigners, get out!” that night.
“All of a sudden, it was five, seven, not just three. everywhere. There was therefore no way out.
Although Diallo cannot recall how long they were being pursued, at some time he was able to phone the police, and the attackers fled when they finally showed there.
