Re-Election of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan by 97.66%

After a controversial election that was marred by days of violent protests, a reported low voter turnout, and the absence of any opposition candidates, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan was re-elected with an astounding 97.6% of the vote, the electoral commission said on Saturday.

In an election where her primary opponents were disqualified or imprisoned months earlier, the ultimate outcome, which declared Hassan the winner three days after ballots closed, validates what many had expected. After she first took office in 2021 after the passing of her predecessor, John Magufuli, the result gives her her first elected term.

Following three days of intense protests and violence that started on election day in the 68 million-person country, the results were announced in the commercial hub, Dar es Salaam, amid a quiet but tense atmosphere.

International anxiety over the stability of a nation that was initially optimistic about a more open political era under Hassan has led to a number of embassies advising their employees to refrain from non-essential travel due to the disturbance.
