Pope Leo’s Trip of Africa Provokes Controversy and Optimism

Algeria celebrates a historic papal debut as Pope Leo XIV prepares for his first significant trip to Africa next month, while Equatorial Guinea is growing increasingly unhappy with the compulsory payments required for the visit.

On April 13, the US pope will travel to Algeria as the country’s first pope. Leo will attend service at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers and then in Annaba, the home of Saint Augustine, despite the fact that Islam is the official state religion.

The visit takes place a few days after seven Catholic monks were killed during Algeria’s civil war thirty years ago. Equatorial Guinea: dissatisfaction over the expenses of the papal visit

To assist fund the celebration, authorities in Equatorial Guinea, where Leo will spend two days starting on April 21, have deducted up to 55,000 CFA francs (€75) from government servants’ and military personnel’s salaries.

According to reports, students must purchase papal-themed attire in order to attend formal events. The policies are criticized as unjust in a nation where poverty remains pervasive despite oil wealth.

Under President Teodoro Obiang Nguema’s decades-long leadership, public disagreement is uncommon. During his visit, the pope is still anticipated to visit a memorial place and interact with inmates.
