Madagascar: 13 Charged with Plotting to Murder Caretaker Leader Randrianirina

Madagascar has charged 13 people, including a general, with plotting to assassinate interim President Michael Randrianirina, as the country deals with political upheaval following last year’s riots. Randrianirina took control in October, following youth-led protests that prompted his predecessor, Andry Rajoelina, to step down.

According to state prosecutor Narindra Navalona Rakotoniaina, 11 individuals have been detained, and arrest warrants have been filed for others involved in the suspected assassination plot targeting the 52-year-old leader. It should be noted that senior officers are among those involved in this case, including a general who has already spoken publicly and expressed his intention to take part in a coup,” she said.

Rakotoniaina would not identify the general, but did state that Colonel Patrick Rakotomamonjy was among those who “designed and organised” the operation. Rakotomamonjy had served as a director in the presidency until his resignation in January.

Investigators discovered WhatsApp communications exchanged between the suspects, and several confirmed that money from their personal accounts was used to support the operation, according to the prosecutor.
