Peace Not Likely to be Achieved During Goma Residence’s Visit by MONUSCO Chairman
Residents of Goma expressed pessimism on the prospects of peace as the acting head of the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo touched down on Thursday. The AFC/M23 rebels took the city more than a year ago, and MONUSCO will back their efforts to establish a lasting peace.
According to local David Chimuda, MONUSCO is nothing more than a “distraction.”He lamented that despite numerous long-term announcements of ceasefires, none of them had been implemented.
Like him, Pascal Bahati, a local, has heard rumours that Vivian van de Perre has broken into the city.War broke out twenty years ago, and it is still going on with casualties piling up. In reality, MONUSCO is completely inactive.
Fighting persists on multiple fronts despite a US-brokered accord between the Rwandan and Congolese governments and continuing talks with the rebels. The violence has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with more than 7 million individuals forced to flee their homes, as reported by the United Nations refugee agency.
