According to Reports, the Alleged Leader of the Benin Coup Attempt Seeks Safety in Togo
Several sources claim that the purported leader of last week’s failed coup attempt in Benin has sought safety in neighboring Togo. Lomé 2, a neighborhood of the Togolese capital, is where Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri and other alleged coup participants are hiding out, Beninese government officials told Reuters on Wednesday. Jeune Afrique also reported this site.
Tigri and seven other troops appeared on Benin’s official television on Sunday. Tigri was named as the group’s head, and they claimed to have overthrown President Patrice Talon. However, with the help of French logistical support and Nigerian troops, Benin’s armed forces put an end to the coup attempt. A government spokeswoman said that in the hours that followed, at least 14 people were taken into custody.
Tigri was able to flee, and in the days that followed, no one knew where he was. Following the recent wave of coups in West Africa, Sunday’s gathering serves as yet another test for regional collaboration. According to reports, Beninese officials have requested that Togo extradite the soldiers who are on the run.
