China’s Xi, North Korea’s Kim Meet in Beijing, Vow to Strengthen Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed their commitment to stronger ties during talks in Beijing following a World War II commemoration, according to state media from both countries.

The two leaders met Thursday at the Great Hall of the People, a day after Kim attended a Chinese military parade alongside foreign dignitaries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit marks Kim’s first trip to China in six years.

Xi praised the “traditional friendship” between the two nations and pledged to further consolidate and advance bilateral relations, regardless of global changes, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported. North Korea’s KCNA said discussions focused on expanding high-level exchanges, boosting strategic cooperation, and safeguarding common interests in international and regional affairs.

Kim, who traveled with his young daughter, departed Beijing by private train Thursday evening. His presence at the parade with 26 other foreign leaders has fueled speculation about succession plans, while also highlighting China’s role as Pyongyang’s main ally and trading partner. It marked Kim’s first appearance at an international event alongside a large gathering of world leaders since he assumed power in late 2011.
