Nigerian School Collapse Claims The Lives Of Children

In the central Plateau state of Nigeria, a school building collapsed, leaving at least 132 people injured and 22 children dead, according to local officials.

Friday morning, as the children were in class, Saint Academy in the state capital of Jos collapsed. Youngsters were left stranded beneath the rubble.

To get to many of the people trapped, volunteers had to cut through the concrete piles and twisted iron rods using excavators, hammers, and their bare hands.

At least 22 children had perished in the collapse, according to police, while numerous others were being treated at nearby hospitals.

It’s estimated that the school has more than 1,000 students.

According to local neighbor Abel Fuandai, “the scale of the tragedy is frightening” after learning of his friend’s son’s death.

The state administration issued an order for other schools “with structural concerns” to close right away, citing the school’s “weak structure and unsafe location near a riverbank” and stating that an inquiry is in progress.

Additionally, it recommended Jos hospitals to treat injured patients first, “regardless of documentation or payment”.

According to locals, the Plateau had three days of intense rain before the collapse.
