Nigerian Labor Unions Are Going On An Indefinite Strike Over The Minimum Wage

The two largest labor unions in Nigeria announced an indefinite walkout on Monday due to what they describe as a disagreement with the government over a new minimum wage.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) both threatened to go on strike on Friday if the government did not address their complaints about the minimum wage requirement.

They had demanded on Tuesday that the government raise the minimum salary to 60,000 Naira, but the idea was turned down.

The government representatives did not show up for the Friday meeting, which infuriated the two unions.

The two unions are also requesting that the government halt the increase in electricity rates that was implemented last month.

Some customers saw their electricity costs more than double in April, and officials have stated that this year’s subsidies will save the government at least $788 million.

This is the latest cost-cutting move taken by President Bola Tinubu’s administration as the most populous nation in Africa battles diminishing revenue as a result of persistent oil theft and falling investments.
