Nigeria is Shaken by a New Mass Kidnapping that the Police Originally Denied
Nigerian police have reversed their earlier position and confirmed that dozens of Christian worshippers were kidnapped by gunmen in northern Kaduna state, adding to growing pressure on the country as it faces international concern over worsening insecurity.
More than 170 people were abducted during Sunday church services at three locations, according to reports. The attackers were members of criminal gangs commonly known as bandits. The incident is the latest in a series of mass kidnappings across northern Nigeria, affecting both Christian and Muslim communities.
The abductions come amid heightened global attention on Nigeria’s security situation. Last month, the United States carried out air strikes in Nigeria after US President Donald Trump accused militants of targeting Christians in mass killings. Nigerian authorities said those strikes were aimed at groups linked to the Islamic State.
However, the limited military action has had little impact on the broader violence gripping the country. Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including jihadist insurgencies and bandit attacks in the north, as well as ongoing farmer herder clashes over land and resources. The Kaduna kidnappings followed another major abduction late last year in neighbouring Niger state, where hundreds of Catholic schoolchildren were taken and later released.
