Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Should be Put to a Referendum, According to Polisario Front

The Polisario Front, an independence organization in Western Sahara, stated on Thursday that it might be prepared to accept a plan for autonomy put out by Morocco. The catch is huge: it would only do so if the Sahrawi people approved it in a referendum that included the option of independence.

According to Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Polisario’s chief diplomat, the organization submitted a “expanded proposal” to the UN on Monday. In accordance with international law, these choices include independence, integration, and a contract of free association, which it claimed might be similar to Morocco’s plan.

Although the movement was becoming closer to the Moroccans, Beissat stated that it was impossible to discuss its autonomy plan outside of a vote. Amid pressure to find a solution to end the 50-year conflict, the Security Council is scheduled to review a new resolution on the region’s future on October 31.

An increasing number of Western, Arab, and African countries are leaning toward supporting Rabat’s proposal to make the disputed territory autonomous under the kingdom’s sovereignty. Up until 1975, Western Sahara was a Spanish colony. Since then, Rabat has mainly controlled the region, which it views as an essential component of Morocco.
