Elevating The Lives Of Gold Miners Of Guinea: Tidiane Koita
We recently had the privilege of interviewing Tidiane Koita, President of the Orpailleurs of Guinea. By observing the huge potential held by orpailleurs towards the mining sector, Tidiane prioritized building innovative solutions and collaborations with entities of the industry to enhance the lives of orpailleurs. Along with his team, Tidiane also introduced a cooperative system where orpailleurs pool resources to buy modern equipment collectively, fostering their overall development. Recognizing his exceptional work in this field globally, Tidiane has been recently awarded with Trophée de l’Africanité in Paris, which he dedicated to the hard work of all the gold miners in Guinea.

Spark Behind The Journey

We started the interview by asking, “What inspired you to start or lead this business, and how has the journey surprised you?”

Tidiane shared, “I was inspired to lead this organization because I saw the untapped potential of the orpailleurs to not only contribute to the economy but also improve their own lives. Growing up in a community closely tied to gold mining, I understood their challenges firsthand. What surprised me most was the resilience and creativity of the miners. Despite limited resources, they find innovative ways to work, and their dedication has been a constant source of inspiration for me.”

Looking Back At Time

We were interested to learn how Tidiane Koita would change his journey if he could advise his younger self. So, we asked, “If you could go back to your first year in this role, what advice would you give yourself?”
He reflected, “I would advise myself to focus more on building partnerships early on. Collaboration with government entities, NGOs, and private stakeholders is key to driving sustainable change. I would also remind myself to be patient; real progress takes time, especially when dealing with systemic issues in this industry.”

Approach To Handle Challenges

Challenges are an inevitable part of every business journey. To learn how Tidiane Koita overcomes such situations, we asked, “How do you approach solving problems that don’t have clear solutions?” “I start by listening—to miners, communities, and experts. Then, I gather as much information as possible to understand the problem fully. Collaboration is crucial; I often bring together different stakeholders to brainstorm and find innovative solutions. For instance, when faced with environmental issues, I collaborated with environmental scientists to introduce alternative methods that reduce the use of harmful chemicals like mercury.” He responded.

Career-Defining Moment In Business

Eager to learn more about a certain experience that shaped Tidiane’s leading approach to Orpailleurs of Guinea, we inquired, “Can you share a unique experience that shaped the way you run your business today?”
Tidiane replied, “A defining moment for me was visiting a mining community devastated by pollution. Seeing children play near contaminated rivers drove home the urgent need for sustainable practices. This experience shaped my belief that economic growth and environmental preservation must go hand in hand. It motivated me to advocate for cleaner mining methods and training programs.”

Implementing Unconventional Business Ideas

We further asked, “What’s the most unconventional idea you’ve implemented, and how did it turn out?” “We introduced a cooperative system where orpailleurs collectively pool resources to buy modern equipment. This approach was unconventional because most miners are used to working independently. Initially, there was resistance, but over time, the increased productivity and reduced costs convinced many to join. Today, these cooperatives are thriving.” He added.

Staying Updated With Latest Trends

Regardless of the industry, staying ahead with the latest industry trends crucially helps a business seize the best opportunities in the market. So, we asked Tidiane, “How do you identify and seize new opportunities in your industry?” Tidiane mentioned, “I stay informed about global trends in mining and sustainability. Networking at international conferences and workshops has helped me identify new technologies and funding opportunities. For example, I recently partnered with an NGO to introduce mercury-free mining equipment, which is now being piloted in several communities.”

A Collaborative Leadership Approach

When it comes to leading a business effectively, every business leader has their own unique approach. To learn Tidiane Koita’s perspective on this, we asked, “If you had to describe your leadership style in one word, what would it be, and why?” “Collaborative. I believe in empowering others and fostering a sense of community. By involving miners, local leaders, and external stakeholders in decision-making, we create solutions that are inclusive and sustainable.” He shared.

Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

We also asked, “What’s a challenge you faced that turned into an unexpected opportunity?” Tidiane Koita added, “The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global gold markets and local mining activities. Initially, it was a huge setback, but it also forced us to explore local markets for gold. This led to the creation of a domestic gold-buying program, which reduced dependence on international buyers and stabilized prices for miners.”

A Wave Of Change

To learn how Tidiane Koita would like to alter certain aspects of his industry, we asked, “If you could change one thing about the industry you work in, what would it be?” “I would formalize the artisanal mining sector. Formalization would provide miners with legal protections, better access to financing, and improved working conditions. It would also help the government collect taxes, which could be reinvested into the communities.” He shared.

Solutions To Industry Challenges

The orpailleurs’ industry faces significant challenges, including environmental concerns, safety issues, and informality. What are your proposed solutions for these problems? Tidiane Koita responded, “For environmental concerns, I would introduce affordable and accessible technologies that eliminate harmful practices like mercury use. We need government and international support to fund these initiatives. Moreover, for safety issues, we would provide miners with training on safety standards and access to protective equipment. Additionally, establishing community health programs will address mining-related illnesses.  And lastly, introducing informality in the sector. By implementing a licensing system that is simple and affordable, we can allow miners to operate legally. This would also help integrate them into the formal economy.”

Envisioning The Future

To understand Tidiane’s vision for the upcoming times of his organization, we asked, “What’s your vision for the future of orpailleurs in Guinea?” “I envision a future where artisanal mining is safe, sustainable, and recognized as a vital part of Guinea’s economy. By formalizing the sector and adopting greener technologies, we can improve livelihoods while protecting the environment. My goal is to transform artisanal mining into a source of pride for our country—a model of how tradition and innovation can coexist.” Tidiane Koita added.

Recognitions And Success Across The Mining Industry

We lastly asked, “You recently received the Trophée de l’Africanité in Paris during the meeting of the High Commission of African Diasporas. What does this recognition mean to you and the community of gold miners in Guinea?” Tidiane shared, “Receiving the Trophée de l’Africanité in Paris was an immense honor, not only for me but also for all the gold miners in Guinea. This award symbolizes international recognition of the efforts we have made to highlight an activity that is often overlooked but plays a crucial role in the economic and social development of our communities.  It is a collective victory that shines a light on the hard work of thousands of men and women who, despite immense challenges, continue to contribute to the wealth and heritage of our country. This trophy strengthens our determination to pursue reforms, improve working conditions, and adopt sustainable practices.  I dedicate this award to all the gold miners in Guinea and Africa, as well as to the African diaspora, which plays a vital role in the continent’s development. Together, we have proven that solidarity, resilience, and belief in our potential can take us far. Finally, I want to thank the High Commission of African Diasporas for this recognition, which brings greater visibility to our initiatives and inspires new collaborations for the future.” Also Read: Bukavu Residents are Mobilized by Civil Society to Oppose the M23 Danger The US Proclaims Genocide in Sudan and Imposes Sanctions on the RSF Leader and Businesses
