Libyan Nationals Detained At A Military Camp Make Court Appearances In South Africa

Monday saw the court appearance of 95 Libyan nationals who were detained on Friday after an alleged raid on a covert military training facility in Gauteng, South Africa.

The Libyans said they had come to the nation on study visas to train as security guards, but police investigations indicate they may have received military training, according to a post made by the police on the social media platform X.

The Libyan nationals who were detained near the town of White River, some 360 kilometers (220 miles) east of Johannesburg, will face charges for making false statements on their visa applications, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa.

“When they left their country in Libya and came here to study in South Africa, however where they were found they were doing training to become soldiers,” stated Monica Nyuswa.

The court has decided to hire an Arabic interpreter, so the case has been postponed until August 5th.

The 95 people who showed up in court wearing civilian attire will all be kept under detention.

Authorities declared that they were looking into the possibility of additional unlawful outposts in other regions of the nation.
