Leaders of Mali, Niger, And Burkina Faso Gather in Bamako for The Alliance of Sahel States Meeting
The military leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are holding high-level negotiations in Bamako as the Alliance of Sahel States moves closer to regional autonomy. The goal of the second AES summit is to decrease dependency on the West African regional grouping ECOWAS and increase cooperation within the alliance.
It emphasizes development, communication, defense and security, and counterterrorism initiatives throughout the three nations. Assimi Goïta, the president of Mali, and Abdourahamane Tchiani, the president of Niger, met on the tarmac at Bamako Airport on Monday before proceeding to the presidential palace. Ibrahim Traoré, the president of Burkina Faso, arrived at the summit on Tuesday morning following an unforeseen delay.
These actions came after military coups caused tension between all three nations and the majority of their Western allies. The three nations formally declared the formation of a combined military force to combat terrorism in the area before to the summit.
Goïta, Tchiani, and Traoré also introduced the Alliance of Sahel States TV broadcaster on Tuesday. The station has been seen as a tool for advancing the bloc’s objectives and combating misinformation.
