Larijani’s and Other Senior Iranian Security Officers’ Funerals Drew Thousands of Mourners

On Wednesday, thousands of Iranians flocked to Tehran to attend the funeral of senior Iranian security personnel. Live footage of a funeral procession for prominent Iranian security official Ali Larijani, the deceased commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s all-volunteer Basij army, and other individuals was shown on Iranian state television in Tehran.

As Larijani’s body and his son, who was also killed in an Israeli strike, passed on a bed of a semitruck decorated with pictures of the fallen, thousands of people flocked to the procession. Iranian flags were waved during the funeral.

Top Iranian security official Ali Larijani and Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Basij force, which is well-known for its involvement in quelling unrest, were both killed by Israel’s military in an overnight strike.

The paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said on Wednesday that it had used multiple-warhead missiles, which have a higher chance of eluding missile defense systems and can overwhelm radar tracking systems, to target central Israel in response to Israel’s killing of Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and one of the nation’s most powerful figures.
