Kenya: Nairobi Police Ban on Protesters is Suspended By Court
On Thursday, July 18, a Kenyan court lifted a police prohibition on protests in the nation’s capital.
The ban is on hold while a Kenyan NGO’s appeal challenging the police directive is heard and decided, according to the Milimani law courts.
The acting police inspector general for Nairobi issued an indefinite ban on protests on Wednesday, July 17, citing a lack of leadership necessary to guarantee orderly demonstrations in the CBD and its environs.
The protests were scheduled to march to the president’s office, but the suspension occurred before that.
On Thursday, July 18, there were a lot of police officers out on the streets, monitoring the CBD. Principal thoroughfares that led to the president’s residence were blocked up.
The center of the youth-led demonstrations, which have also spread around the nation, has been Nairobi.
Police are said to have shot protesters to death, compelling the former inspector general, Japheth Koome, to step down.
A government spokesman claimed on Thursday that the ongoing, month-long protests had caused losses to the economy of about $45 million.
Protesters were urged to embrace patriotism by Isaac Mwaura.
