Kenya: Countrywide Demonstrations Have Left at Least ten People Dead and 29 Wounded

During anti-government rallies in Kenya, police battled with protesters Monday while authorities closed most businesses and barricaded main highways into the city, Nairobi. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, a government-funded national rights monitor, reports that at least 10 individuals lost their lives and 29 others were injured across the country on Monday.
Although it listed considerably fewer injured civilians than the rights watchdog, a police statement released Monday night listed 11 fatalities and said that several police officers had been hurt. One protester was hurt as police used tear gas canisters and shot at protesters who set bonfires and threw stones at them during roadblocks.
Reporters for the Associated Press saw protestors carrying a wounded individual while yelling anti-police slogans. On July 7, Kenyans were planning protests against the high cost of living, suspected corruption, and police violence. They also wanted President William Ruto to resign.
In Kenya’s recent history, July 7, also known as Saba Saba, is a pivotal day, as it commemorates the first substantial demonstrations 35 years ago that demanded a change from a one-party state to a multiparty democracy, which was achieved in the 1992 elections.
