Kagame of Rwanda Criticizes US Sanctions and Says they are Unfair to the DR Congo

President Paul Kagame claimed that US sanctions are like “insults thrown in the face” of Rwanda and that Washington is putting “heavy pressure” on Kigali but handling the DR Congo “delicately.

In early March, the United States put sanctions on the Rwandan army because it was backing the M23 anti-government organization, which has taken over large areas of the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2021.

In December, the DRC and Rwanda signed a peace pact at the request of US President Donald Trump. This was the most recent attempt to end the conflict, although fighting has persisted on the front.”Sanctions and threats are just insults thrown at my country,” Kagame stated in an interview with Jeune Afrique news source at the end of March that was released on Friday. He noted that the US government “must not give the impression of putting a lot of pressure on one while being nice to the other.

Kagame declared that Rwanda was meeting “all its obligations under the agreements” inked in Washington. He also said that the DRC “only partially meets them or not at all.” The M23 made progress in early 2025, taking control of the important eastern cities of Goma and Bukavu.
